Tom Raworth Project

As part of a street-front improvement grant from the Hackney Central Impact and Ideas Fund, we were commissioned by graphic design practice Polytechnic to create a text-based installation that commemorates writer, printer and publisher Tom Raworth (1938– 2017) outside Bodney Road Studio.

Using salvageable elements of the existing gates and fencing, we referenced the industrial grating in the local area and created a dynamic multi-faceted screen featuring a small doorway which is opened by a custom-made sphere handle, and a noticeboard that will house newly commissioned poems from local writers. We wanted to include some perforations in unusual places, notably the grated opening placed at the bottom of the installation, designed with the Bodney Road Studio resident cat, Arsene and his peering-out personality, in mind.
